Event Information

This is a two day course, but clock hours are only available for Day 1 (6 hours).  Teams of 2 or 3 from a local association/district are recommended.

Day 1

This course offers an in-depth exploration of the legal and procedural framework governing special education in the United States, with a particular focus on the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process. Participants will gain comprehensive knowledge of key federal laws such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, along with an understanding of critical legal precedents. The course equips educators, administrators, and advocates with the skills needed to navigate the IEP process effectively, ensuring compliance with legal mandates and promoting equitable, inclusive education for students with disabilities.

Learning objectives:

Understand key federal laws, including IDEA, Section 504, and their implications for the IEP process. Describe each step of the IEP process, including evaluation, eligibility determination, and goal setting. Identify the roles and responsibilities of IEP team members and foster meaningful collaboration among educators, parents, and service providers. Apply principles of Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to ensure IEPs support inclusive educational opportunities. Navigate program changes, parental consent, and reevaluation processes within the context of IEP compliance.

Day 2:

Building upon the Special Education Law (6hr) course, attendees will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of empowerment by using mandated rules and regulations to advocate for special education program, staff and students. Participants will learn how to build local association capacity to solve issues for special education staff through strategies such as protecting rights under contract language and using the Union Shield to ensure fair and appropriate special education service delivery. Participant teams will identify and design action plans to address the 2 to 3 most pressing special education issues within their district/region.

Catering Information

Coffee and pastries will be available each morning. A light lunch will also be provided on both days. While we welcome dietary considerations, please note that we may not be able to accommodate all needs. If you have specific requirements, feel free to contact the WEA staff directly.
