CAMI Coaching and Mentoring Institute
A Transformative Learning Experience for Early Career Educators and Beyond
The CAMI Coaching and Mentoring Institute is a statewide professional learning experience designed to support educators in their first years of practice and those seeking to deepen their equity-centered leadership. CAMI is built around three core pillars:
• Identity Development: Explore who you are as an educator, unpack your lived experiences, and reflect on how identity shapes your practice.
• Anti-Oppressive Practice: Learn strategies to recognize and disrupt systems of oppression in schools and classrooms, while building inclusive, affirming environments for all students.
• Community and Connection: Build relationships with other educators across Washington who are committed to equity, justice, and belonging.
While CAMI includes tools for coaching and mentoring, its primary focus is on helping educators build confidence, clarity, and community in their early years. Participants will engage in interactive sessions, guided reflection, and practical application—all grounded in adult learning theory and culturally responsive pedagogy.

Course Description
Explore the Washington State Standards for Mentoring and the shared vision of excellence for mentors to set goals for continued growth. Build awareness of how identity markers, beliefs, and positionality impact the establishment of the productive relationships necessary to engage in meaningful learning-focused conversations (Standard 1 & 6). Develop the skills needed to participate in learning-focused conversations that foster reflection and support the development of equitable and culturally responsive practices (Standard 1 & 6). Understand the importance of data gathering and providing feedback to support mentee reflection and growth (Standard 2 & 6).Course Objectives
Participants will explore strategies for educators to refine their communication skills, facilitate team building, and challenge inquiry, to name a few. The goal is for educators throughout Washington to apply strategies to uncover and further develop their leadership skills and provide guidance to their colleagues for dynamic and transformative relationships; to promote and support inclusive learning environments. Awareness, Identities, And Biases ● Establish a trustworthy environment with open exchange of ideas ● Unpack diversity, equity, and cultural competency biases and create a foundational understanding of how inequities are perpetuated culturally and systematically ● Describe the characteristics of culturally competent educators ● Recognize how educators’ biases impact student achievement.
